Day 11 – Bariloche

Well today was a complete write-off, we both spent the day at the hostel suffering from what my sister so eloquently terms “squirty bum”. We cooked dinner in the hostel kitchen last night – perhaps it wasn’t as clean as we expected?

It started about 3am when I woke with stomach cramps – after a lengthy visit to the bathroom, I managed to get back to sleep – but when I woke early in the morning I found that Leanne had also made several trips herself. Fortunately we did not have upset stomachs as well – we didn’t actually feel unwell – we just couldn’t venture out for fear of needing to find a bathroom in a hurry. A number of times in the morning we found ourselves fighting for the bathroom – but we managed … fortunately we aren’t staying in a 6 or 8 bed dorm, or worse, with shared bathrooms down the hall!!

So we spent the day either in bed relaxing (unfortunately I had just finished my book the night before – but now Leanne has started reading it), and down in the TV room watching movies. I managed to get caught up with a few things on the computer.

We had visited some of the chocolate shops yesterday – so at least we had some sugar to keep us going as needed. Late in the day we both felt up to a short walk – so we took a risk heading down the road to the corner store to find something to eat – some dry biscuits and lemonade. We also wanted to stock up on stuff for tomorrow – a 12 hour trip by boat and bus to Puerto Varas, and we weren’t sure what food would be available.

We hope that we will be over the bugs by tomorrow morning, since a long boat/bus trip with squirty bum would be a very unpleasant experience – even with Immodium. We were both feeling much better this evening, so we are hopeful tomorrow will go okay.

We are a bit sad that we didn’t get to visit Cerro Catedral as was our plan today – a ski lift to the top of a mountain with spectacular views. There are a lot of things to do around Bariloche – there is a big national park here with a lot of hiking and adventure sports. Even though we found Bariloche too busy and touristy, there are a lot of quieter places to stay nearby – we would love to come back and visit one day and spend more time.

Anyway – must get to bed, have a very early start in the morning.

Not nice – not nice at all.

The only place to be when that happens is home – and you are a bit far away to just cut your losses and head home.

Still, be thankful you weren’t on the bus. Friend of ours had a terrible and very embarrassing experience of that in Egypt some years ago.

Ah, squirty bum… I remember it well! Locked in a hotel room in Bangkok, carefully eking out the toilet paper so I didn’t run out. Yikes! At least I had the loo all to myself!
