ADSL line speed:

Upstream: 1018500 (bits per second)
Downstream: 16752800 (bits per second) … that’s about 16Mbps … I was wondering why things were faster all of a sudden :D

Better than the 1.5Mbps currently available on Telstra!

I’m hoping I’ll be able to squeeze a bit more speed out of the line once I’ve done some tweaking.

Might be time to get some rewiring done too … central splitter should help … I’m only about 1km from the exchange, so my speeds should be approaching 20Mbps or more according to this.

Andrew: I guess the main benefits come in doing multiple things at once … particularly VoIP, web surfing, streaming downloads etc. There’s now plenty of bandwidth available to download movies (via a movie on demand service – not pirated !!), as well as speaking on the phone and surfing the web all at the same time.

There’s little benefit for just web surfing … latency slows down the surfing experience somewhat, as does limits at the server end. Pages do load faster than ADSL, but there’s not that much more you can do for the typical web page (unless it is full of horribly large graphics and streaming music and all those other bad things).

It’s more important for me with work – since I work from home, and I download a lot of material over my link … the faster link will make me much more productive. Provided I can get a decent pipe all the way from the server that is … in many cases my link is no longer the bottleneck, it’s somewhere else in the network. *sigh*.

Dunc – didn’t you have ADSL2+ at your old place ?

You chose to move and lose your ADSL … so I have no sympathy for you :p

Hopefully WiMax will take off and you’ll get good wireless capabilities there. Unfortunately I wouldn’t hold your breath – likely to take a few years for coverage in Adelaide to become decent.

Sim can you give a practical example of what that would mean to someone on a standard broadband plan in terms of increased performance?

I play streaming video ok, but I guess downloads would zip now.
