Sydney train timetable changes

Wednesday 7th September, 2005 Leave a Comment

There has been much in the local news about the problems with Sydney’s rail network and the new changes to the timetables that have come in recently.

Fortunately, Artarmon residents are one of the beneficiaries of the new timetables.

Artarmon is positioned between two “interchange” stations – St Leonards and Chatswood. Express trains would always stop at these stations, but would frequently pass Artarmon by. In fact, generally only every second train actually stopped at Artarmon. This was particularly problemsome when coming back to Artarmon from St Leonards – they never seemed to be able to synchronise the displays on the platform about which trains stopped where, with where the trains were actually going to stop. This meant that there was a fairly strong chance that anyone not paying careful attention would end up in Chatswood rather than Artarmon. This has happened to me too many times, and is very annoying.

One of the changes they have made with the new timetables is to have practically every train now stop at Artarmon (and other such underserviced stations closer to the city such as Waverton and Wollstonecraft). So even though the trains are coming less frequently down the line, they will actually be stopping at Artarmon (in both directions) much more frequently. This is a very good thing.

We’ll have to wait and see whether reality matches up with the promise.
