I went searching for products that provide web searching facilities for websites – a tool that allows you to build you own search facility into your own website.
Because I had some specific requirements for the software (Macromedia FlashPaper indexing support), I did some Google searches for candidates.
The amazing (and frustrating) thing I found with a lot of the product websites that sell web search engine technology – they didn’t have a search facility on their own sites !!! Duh !
Because I couldn’t find any details about their products quickly by searching for it – I simply discarded them as an option. They lost a potential sale. How stupid can some people be ?
The only candidate I’ve come up with so far is WrenSoft, with their product Zoom. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, but it looks promising. The only real requirement is a Windows machine to run the search indexer from – doesn’t even have to be a part of your website (index files are uploaded to your web server via FTP).
I’ll check it out and post some feedback.
The coolest thing so far about the product (other than the FlashPaper support) – is that they are local! An Australian company based here in Sydney. Neato.
