Piano Playing

Saturday 28th May, 2005 Leave a Comment

Well, I spent quite a bit of time this evening playing with my new piano – and boy are my fingers tired. Especially since I’ve not played piano much since I left home nearly 15 years ago – my synthesizers have very light keys, so I lost a lot of my touch for the heavier piano keyboard.

But I’m enjoying it – it sounds great … pity I can’t play it at a decent volume (pesky neighbours), but the headphones work really well (LJ still complains about me making too many thumping noises, even if she can’t hear the actual sound).

I still remember my scales and chords, but I’m a little rusty on some things – my music reading is a little slow – out of practice.

Hooked LJ’s iPod up to the piano’s input jacks so I can play songs through the speaker system (or the headphones) and then play along on the piano. Worked a treat. Now I just have to learn some songs.

Went through my collection of sheet music – almost all of it was purchased while I was in highschool – late 80’s … and it shows. *yawn*. Time to visit some music shops and see if I can find something a little more contemporary to play.

I’ve still got a very tattered copy of the Moonlight Sonata that I’ve never really mastered (not really suited to synth keyboards) … I at least want to get the first movement down – and perhaps the second movement would be nice too. That third movement is the killer though – I don’t think I want to be bothered trying to learn that. Maybe when I retire and actually have time to really practice and get good.

This is going to be good – I hadn’t realised just how much I’d missed my music. Of course, I’m going to have to be strong and resist the temptation to hook the piano up to my computer and start fiddling with other stuff too – I don’t really have time for that kind of thing.
