US Day 25: WDW – Lotusphere 1, Epcot

Sunday 23rd January, 2005 Leave a Comment

Walt Disney World – Lotusphere day 1, Epcot

Very early start for me today, had my first staff responsibilities for the pre-conference day at Lotusphere. The main conference starts tomorrow, but they had some special sessions for business partners, and some optional technical “jumpstart” sessions to allow people to catch up on areas they might not have much experience in.

My responsibility was room monitor for some rooms at the Swan resort convention center, which turned out to be very boring, since my rooms were actually “overflow” rooms, which are used when the main designated room becomes full, or if they run an unscheduled replay of a session. Mostly I was responsible for checking badges to ensure that only people who were permitted to attend were allowed in, and helping people find seats and collecting evaluation forms at the end. Very exciting stuff (not).

My shift started at 7:30am and finished at 12:30pm, at which time I went and grabbed some lunch, then walked back to our room, got changed, then walked over to Epcot to meet Leanne, who had been there since mid-morning.

We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the Epcot theme park and went on some of the rides and investigated some of the other features there. Our favourite feature would be the Turtle Talk at Sea Base Alpha part of The Living Seas Pavilion, which is hosted by Crush the turtle from the movie Finding Nemo – an interactive question and answer session which was fascinating and very cleverly done. We also enjoyed the Test Track, where you get to drive a test car and put it through its paces on a high speed test track.

Because it was unseasonably cold today in Orlando (maximum was less than 10 degrees celcius, which is very cold for this area), we decided not to hang around for dinner, so we bought some food from Epcot and then walked back to our hotel room to eat, and had a quiet night in. I have to up early for my shift tomorrow morning anyway, so an early night is in order I feel.
