Florida Keys
We spent the day today driving along the Florida Keys – a beautiful archipelago of 40 islands that stretches south from the tip of Florida, dividing the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Connecting many of the islands is the 126 mile Overseas Highway, which includes 42 bridges – of which the descriptively named Seven Mile Bridge is the most impressive by far.
Much of the road is single lane, so travel can be quite slow at times – the trip took over 3 hours from downtown Miami, but it is quite spectacular, and the slower speeds give you time to appreciate the views.
We arrived at Key West at the end of the highway in time for a late lunch, which was very pleasant, watching the world go by at a leisurely pace. After lunch, we strolled around the area admiring the quaint architecture and the history of the area. We visited the southern-most point of continental USA, where a large marker commemorates the fact, and dutifully informs you that Cuba is a mere 90 miles away from this point.
The drive home was uneventful, but we did take the opportunity to take a bit of a stroll along part of the Seven Mile Pier to enjoy the sunset.
We arrived home around 9:30pm.
