US Day 5: SeaWorld San Diego

Monday 3rd January, 2005 Leave a Comment

SeaWorld San Diego

Day 5 started off rather wet – the forecast “storms” overnight dumped large amounts of rain on San Diego, it was still raining heavily when we departed.

The two dozen cars in the SeaWorld carpark (which looked like it could hold several thousand cars !!!) indicated to us that at least we should be able to enjoy the place without the usual crowds they experience. It rained for the first hour we were there – but soon cleared up and we enjoyed the rest of the day.

SeaWorld feels very similar to Sea World on the Gold Coast in Australia (I wonder if there’s a relationship between them ?) – half theme park, half marine aquarium. The highlights in San Diego were definitely Shamu and the other Killer Whales. These are amazing creatures – so beautiful and graceful, yet so awesomely powerful.

I’m not sure if it was worth the more than US$50 each it costs to get in – but Shamu and the Killer Whales are still a pretty compelling reason to go.

The Dolphins were great too – and we really really liked the Penguin enclosure, where they had arctic conditions for their Emporer Penguins. We thought the piped music playing in the Shark Encounter aquarium was quite scarily effective !

Again, I’ll post some more details and photos on ZooBeat, until then you can check out the rest of our photos in my gallery: SeaWorld San Diego
