Holiday Prologue

Saturday 19th June, 2004 Leave a Comment

Our 10th Wedding anniversary was on the 11th June – to celebrate we decided to take 2 weeks holiday and travel to Perth on the Indian Pacific – one of the longest and most fascinating train trips in the world.

Of course, not being one to do things by half, we chose the most expensive cabin on the train – the Gold Kangaroo Deluxe cabin. There’s only one of these on each train – and it costs a mere $400 a night more than a regular Gold Kangaroo cabin. It’s three nights to Perth. It better be worth it !

The original plan was to take the train both directions, but given how long that would take out of our holiday time in Perth, and how expensive it was going to be to do it both ways, we compromised and decided to fly home instead. This helped justify spending more on the cabin on the way over.

Ideally, I would have preferred to book it so we were either on the train, or at least in Perth on our anniversary, but unfortunately we left it too late to book (March !) and we had to wait a couple of weeks – but I think it turned out okay in the end. We spent the June long weekend home together – and headed in to Darling Harbour on Monday evening to catch The Cat Empire playing at the Jazz Festival – I estimate over 10,000 people sitting and standing on the shores of Cockle Bay overlooking the pontoon where the band played from. We were thoroughly entertained for two hours by their funky jazz, and by the harbour foreshore authority plucking people from the water when they decided to swim over to the pontoon, some of them naked ! All part of the atmosphere.

I’ll keep a bit of a diary about our travels on the Indian Pacific and post it here as well.
