IBM Workplace Client Technologies and OpenOffice.org ?

Tuesday 11th May, 2004 Leave a Comment

According to Rajesh Jain’s blog entry IBM’s Server-centric Software, the NY Times has written about IBM’s recently announced Workplace product line, now in it’s version 2.0 phase.

Rajesh quotes a section from the article:

A worker using the Workplace software by I.B.M. can still run Microsoft Office programs. But I.B.M. also offers alternatives, built on free software from the open source project OpenOffice.org, including a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software.

(gee I hate it when people write I.B.M. … IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines, so I don’t know why people bother to abbreviate the full name to I.B.M., but I digress…)

I find it interesting the comment the NY Times made about the editors in the IBM Workplace Client being derived from OpenOffice.org … there have been rumours about IBM using something from OpenOffice.org for a while now, but it was not in this context. I have not seen anything to confirm or deny this, so I’ll have to do some more research.

mmm… maybe I’ll just have to wait until the code is ready and download it – end of the month I believe.
