New RAM and working machine

Saturday 31st January, 2004 Leave a Comment

Well, after a second trip out to EYO to swap over my RAM, I now have a working machine.

The EYO people recommended some Corsair RAM that was actually cheaper than the Kingston RAM I had originally purchased. It’s not quite as fast as the more expensive RAM I was considering, but the differences will be hardly noticeable except in benchmarks – so there’s really no point in spending more money than necessary.

I found a site that was full of very useful information – RAM Guy – a discussion forum where you can be sure someone else has had the same problem you have and already has an answer. Information like RAM timings can be found there too – something that’s often not easy to work out for yourself and can have a huge impact on the stability of your system.

So, now I just need to reload all the software. A time consuming and laborious task – especially as I generally check for updated versions of everything before I install them.

Once I get this machine done, I have to rebuild my old machine for Leanne to use – the fun continues ! (at least I know the hardware works !).
