Pilot: USR Too Quick !!

Wednesday 8th October, 2003 Leave a Comment

Found another blast from the past today… an email I sent to a mailing list back in August 1997 about the new US Robotics Palm Pilot (before it was Palm or even 3com who owned the Palm !).

I had read about the Palm Pilot (as it was called back then) in a magazine, and after some inquiries I discovered that they were not available in Australia yet – and weren’t going to be for another 6-12 months. I thought these things were so incredibly cool – gotta have gadgets. I even thought they could take off as the next generation of PDA (which was exactly what they did !!). So I ordered one directly from US Robotics in the US. They told me 6 weeks to deliver. They lied.

This is the (rather tongue-in-cheek) email I sent to the US Robotics Palm mailing list…

Hi all…

Just wanted to share with you my disgust at USR for their prompt shipping
of my Pilot Personal to Australia…

We are shifting premises at work next week, and so when I ordered my Pilot
Personal I asked them to deliver to our new address. I was told 5 – 6 weeks
for delivery to Australia.

5 – 6 weeks my foot !!!

It arrived today – less than 2 weeks after faxing my order through !!! …
and of course we have not moved into our new premises yet… but
fortunately the people at the new premises kindly instructed the courier to
bring it over to our current address.

So… USR … you ought to be ashamed of yourselves for misleading people
with long quoted shipping times… then shipping in 1/3 of the time just to
annoy them ;-)

Actually… I’m ecstatic… what a great birthday present this turned out
to be !!!

Thanks, USR… keep up the good work !! [/quote]
