Australia’s Tallest ?

Monday 8th September, 2003 15 Comments

(refer to my previous blog entry on this matter for more details)

So what about us poor Aussies ?

Well, we fare pretty poorly in these tallest buildings measurements…

Even Aucklands’s Sky Tower at 328m to the tip is taller than anything we’ve got in Australia (and taller than the Eiffel Tower too !!) – would appear at #38 in my A list previously described.

The Sydney Tower (aka AMP Tower, aka Centerpoint Tower), at 309m comes in at 52nd place in my A list.

Let’s continue my lists from above with a few local buildings…

A. Tallest self-supporting building or tourist tower from ground level to tip:

38. Sky Tower, Auckland – 328m
52. Sydney Tower, Sydney – 309m
101. 120 Collins Street, Melbourne – 264m
110. 101 Collins Street, Melbourne – 260m
124. Governer Philip Tower, Sydney – 254.1m
126. Bourke Place, Melbourne – 254m
133. Rialto Towers, Melbourne – 251.4m
140. Central Park, Perth – 249m
145. BankWest Tower, Perth – 247m
147. Melbourne Central, Melbourne – 246m

B. The “official” height:

54. 120 Collins Street, Melbourne – 264m
61. 101 Collins Street, Melbourne – 260m
74. Bourke Place, Melbourne – 254m
79. Rialto Towers, Melbourne – 251.4m
87. BankWest Tower, Perth – 247m
90. Melbourne Central, Melbourne – 246m
96. Citibank Centre, Sydney – 242.9m
97. Chifley Tower, Sydney – 242.9m
148. MLC Centre, Sydney – 228m
152. Governer Philip Tower, Sydney – 227m

C. Roof height:

48. Sydney Tower, Sydney – 275m
80. Rialto Towers, Melbourne – 251.4m
117. Sky Tower, Auckland – 236.5m
146. MLC Centre, Sydney – 228m
150. Governer Philip Tower, Sydney – 227m
159. Central Park, Perth – 226m
171. Bourke Place, Melbourne – 224m
194. 120 Collins Street, Melbourne – 220m
217. Chifley Tower, Sydney – 215m
221. BankWest Tower, Perth – 214m

D. Roof height of mostly occupiable buildings

65. Rialto Towers, Melbourne – 251.4m
122. MLC Centre, Sydney – 228m
128. Governer Philip Tower, Sydney – 227m
135. Central Park, Perth – 226m
145. Bourke Place, Melbourne – 224m
163. 120 Collins Street, Melbourne – 220m
184. Chifley Tower, Sydney – 215m
190. BankWest Tower, Perth – 214m
210. Melbourne Central, Melbourne – 211m
239. Citibank Centre, Sydney – 206m

So, if we maintain our stance of choosing the measurement which makes each building look the best, we come up with the following:

– Sydney Tower is the tallest building in Australia and the 48th tallest in the world measured to roof height.
– 120 Collins Street is the tallest “official” building in Australia.
– The Rialto Towers are the tallest mostly occupiable buildings measured to roof height in Australia.
– Australia has 8 buildings in the top 100 in the world according to our “official” height measurements.
– Australia’s buildings and towers are pathetic by world standards.

mmm… perhaps if we adjust these figures based on a per capita weighting :D

you’ve got to go to shanghai now to see how many skyscrapers they have… over 90 meters (about 25 floors above), there are over 10,000 skyscrapers in there…

Please update your buildings with Q1 on the Gold Coast: the World’s 20th tallest building and at 322m, taller than all the ones listed for Australia on your page.

Found your info re tallest buildings in Australia and how they compare to the rest of the world very interesting, was looking for some info to compare Rialto Tower in Melbourne with Central Park Tower in Perth. I did the tourist thing on Rialto in 1999, and ran a stair climb race up the Central Park Tower in 2001, and 2002, was wondering how the Rialto runup compared in height…Thanks for the info! Jon.

You’re quite incorrect when comparing Australain cities to other cities around the world. Even refering to the “offical” data in regard to buildings 200 meters or higher, Australia has three cities ( Melb, Syd & Perth .) Only Japan, China and USA can claim a greater number. ****** AND NO. SKY TOWER (AUCKLAND) AND SYDNEY TOWER ARE NOT, REPEAT NOT, BUILDINGS. Great stuff though, I really enjoyed your site. Ross

the antenna atop Governor Phillip tower is 254m.
Adjusted heights of Chifley tower is now 244m.
Australia skyscraper heights ‘arent pathetic” compared
to world heights? 95% of australian skyscrapers are reinforced
concrete construction as oposed to steel framed structures os.
Also Australia will soon boasts 1st/2nd worlds tallest apartment
towers! doesnt sound too pathetic to me?
all info youll ever need is http://www.skyscrapercity.com
    cheers
