A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy

I just discovered Clay Shirky. Clay writes some very interested essays and speeches on Internet economics & culture, media & community and open source. In particular, I was very impressed with the speech A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy.

I have been using the internet since about 1992 while I was at uni. I have participated in mailing lists, usenet newsgroups, discussion forums, and many other such grouping mediums.

More recently, I have been involved with the Somersoft Property Investment Forums since late 2000, and have been the administrator of these forums since August 2002. In this time I have seen the forum grow from a very small community into possibly the largest online community dedicdated to property investment in Australia. The dynamics of dealing with such a large and diverse community have been very interesting, and I read Shirky’s writings agreeing with the salient points along the way, because I have experienced it all myself.
